The Summer Term…

Thank you to all who contributed to such a wonderful Easter Concert.  Feedback on the Dvorák’s New World Symphony has been delightful, especially as it was a debut for BAFCO.  The hard work and commitment from both the choir and orchestra this term is commendable.

BAFCO Summer Term 2019

Looking towards the Summer term, the choir starts rehearsing Elgar’s The Music Makers on Friday 3rd May at 7.00 pm.  Arranged for contralto soloist, choir and orchestra, this work is a poem by Arthur O’Shaughnessy set to quotations of Elgar’s earlier works, namely Sea Pictures, The Enigma Variations, The Dream of Gerontius, and Symphonies No 1 & 2.

If you would like to sing with us, you are welcome to join. There are no auditions but if you can hold a tune and are enthusiastic, our small, friendly group rehearses on Fridays from 7.00 to 9.00 pm, in Barts-the-Less Church, Barts Hospital, West Smithfield (Giltspur Street), EC1A 7BE – just inside the Henry VIII Gate, opposite Smithfield Meat Market.

Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)
The Creation (“Die Schöpfung”)

haydn

The Creation was rapturously received by the audience when it premiered at Schwarzenberg Palace in Vienna in 1798.

During two visits to the UK in the 1790s, Haydn was inspired by Handel’s music.  Thus, with renewed impetus and armed with John Milton’s ‘Paradise Lost’, the tutor of Beethoven and friend of Mozart composed his masterpiece, collaborating with his patron, Baron Gottfried van Swieten, to translate the English text into German.

Set out in three parts, it commences with the Representation of Chaos being transformed into order and light; Part II continues celebrating each aspect of the creation, whilst Part III is dedicated to the relationship between Adam and Eve.
